Museums
• Addis Ababa Museum
Addis Ababa Museum is found at the former residence of Ras Biru, Emperor Menelik II's defense minister. Photographs that depict the progress of the city and weapons used during the Battle of Adwa are some of the materials displayed in the museum.
• Addis Alem Mariam Museum
It is found in the Addis Alem Mariam Church compound, Addis Alem, Oromia and displays the clothes and decorations of several former Ethiopia rulers.
• Arba Minch Museum
It is an ethnographical museum found in Arba Minch, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional state.
• Awash National Park Museum
The Museum found inside the Awash National Park exhibits various stuffed birds, mammals and interpretative materials on the area's flora, fauna, geology and indigenous peoples.
• Aksum (Axum) Museum
This museum of Aksum, Tigray houses a remarkable collection of antiquities. There are several stones bearing Sabean and Ge'ez inscriptions and clay figurines that reveal the hairstyles of the ancient Aksumites.
• Be'ata Mariam Museum
It is located near the former Grand Place sharing the compound of Be'ata Mariam church. This museum owns fascinating wall paintings and articles of historical significance. A chair regularly used by Emperor Menelik II while attending mass in the church, a golden cross that belonged to Abune Kerlos of Alexandria, a prayer stick of Queen Zewditu are some of the articles on display.
• Dega Estifanos Museum
It is found in a monastery of Lake Tana, Amhara National regional State and displays historical artifacts.
• Ethiopian Postal Museum
It is located at the main post office in Addis and depicts collections of stamps from the early 1894 till the present time. Stamps from the UPU member countries are also beautifully exhibited there. Artist's original drawings are included. There is also philatelic literature for reading.
• Ethnographic Museum
This museum is found in the old place of the former Emperor Haile Sellassie I, now in the compound of the Addis Ababa University. It comprises the Emperor's bedroom, ethnographic items of more than eighty language groups, tools of production and some techniques of craftswork and the art gallery. It displays some of the personal gifts presented to the Emperor.
• Harar Community Museum
In this museum, visitors may see artifacts of the Harari people, including their typical household materials and clothings.
• Harar City Council Museum
It displays collection of antiquities from Harar and nearby areas. Memorabilia of the patriot Dejazmach Tefera is also found there.
• Jimma Museum
The museum displays most of historic materials of king Aba Jiffar, his kingdom and cultural objects of local Oromo people and other ethnic groups around Kafa.
• Mekelle Museum
This museum is located in Mekelle Tigray, the former palace of Emperor Yohannes IV. It shows various manuscripts, books and furniture of the emperor's time including a large and ornately carved wooden throne.
• National Museum
The museum has the riches t collection in the country. It exhibits the 3.2 million years old female fossil called "Lucy", historical, archaeological, ethnographical collections, modern art as well as very ancient stone tools. The National Museum helps anthropologists to conduct studies on human origin. At the museum, visitors could take an imaginative journey of millions of years back to visit their ancestors. It is located close to St. Mary Church (A.A.), opposite to the Technology Faculty of the Addis Ababa University.
• Permanent Exhibition of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism
This exhibition displays symbols of the origin of mankind to the contemporary period. It exhibits a prehistoric cave, one room of an Axumite place, portion of Lalibela's church, Gondar castle area and one Harari house interior.
• St. George Cathedral Museum
This museum displays costumes of spiritual leaders and sacred rulers, crosses, religious books written on parchments and many others. Emperor Menelik II believed that his astounding victory at Adwa over the Italians aggressors at Adwa came to happen due to the presence of the Ark, "Tabot" that he took with him from St. George Church, where the museum lies in Addis Ababa.
• The Entoto Museum
It is located at the peak of Entoto Mountain, the northern boundary of Addis Ababa. This museum exhibits ceremonial dresses of Emperor Menelik II and his wife Empress Taitu. The drum, which Menelik used during the battle of Adwa, his crown, bed and Persian carpet are displayed in the museum.
• The Zoological Natural History Museum
It is found at the Natural Science Faculty of Addis Ababa University. In the museum, species of 52 rodents, 36 bats, 20 carnivorous, 8 primates, 450 birds, 50 snakes, 35 lizards, 35 amphibians and 52 fish are on display in their taxidermic forms.
• Wellega Museum
It is located in Nekemte, Oromia, 327 kms west of Addis Ababa. It is one of the museums where major ethnographic and historical collections are found in the country. It has three sections; ethnographic, historic and exhibition.
• Wollo Museum
The museum found in Dessie, Amhara National regional State, houses different artifacts that depict the tradition, history, and customs of various nationalities living in that part of the country.
