Historic Spots Gondar has served as the capital city of Ethiopia during the reign of Emperor Fasilades (1632-1667) and is notable for its medieval castles and churches. The oldest and most impressive one is the two-storey palace of Emperor Fasilades, known as Fassil Ghebbi, built from roughly brown basalt. There are also about twenty palaces, thirty churches and other buildings there. Other treasures of Gondar include the 18th century place of Ras Beit, the ruined palace of Kusquam and the church of Debre Berhan Selassie known for its unique murals. Fassil Ghebbi is included in the World heritage List. There is a daily flight to Gondar.
The walls were built in the mid sixteenth century by one of Harar's most notable rulers, Amir Nur Ibn al-wazir Mujahid. The walls encircled the old town of Harar. The Harari People have been living inside the walled town for more than 300 years, maintaining their own language, customs and religion. The ancient walled city of Harar that was a major commercial center for many centuries is famous for its old buildings and walls. The relics are registered in the World Heritage List of the UNESCO. There is a daily flight to Dire Dawa, 40kms from Harar.
They are situated in Aksum (or Axum), Ethiopia's most ancient city found in Tigray. Aksum is the site of many remarkable monolithic obelisks that are more than 2000 years old. The largest obelisk, which is 35 meters long and weighed 500 tons, is the biggest piece of stone ever cut by humanity any where in the world. The most impressive obelisk, 23 meters in height, stands near another broken obelisk. A 24 meters long and 171 tons obelisk has recently been retrieved from Italy and is being reerected. Quite remarkable artifacts of Aksumites and those colossal stelae hacked from single pieces of rock are symbolic to the ancient Ethiopian civilization. The work reflects a considerable craftsmanship, high level of architectural, technical, geometrical skills and artistic ability. The obelisks of Aksum are registered in the World Heritage List of the UNESCO. There is a daily flight to Aksum.
The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are the most impressive collections of the country's monolithic churches, believed to have been built by king Lalibela (1205-1225). These structures hewn out of solid rock are considered to be among the wonders of the world. Each building reflects beautifully executed craftsmanship while several of them are decorated with fascinating paintings. They are registered in the World Heritage List of the UNESCO. There is a daily flight to Lalibela.
It is found in the bank of the Awash River Valley in Afar National Regional State. The place is where prominent discoveries of stone tools and Homminid species that have made it one of the most famous paleoanthropological sites in the world. This is where the 3.2 million 'Lucy' and 3.3 million year old bones of the earliest child named 'Selam' were discovered.
Tiya is one of the most attractive archaeological sites in Ethiopia. The site is located near a small town called Tiya, in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State. It contains 36 monuments, including 32 on which symbols are engraved. The site had once a funerary function; hence, the stelae are surrounded by scattered graves. It is registered in the World Heritage list of UNESCO.
